Paul Onuachu will have to wait until next week to make his debut for Southampton, his new Premier League team.
On Saturday, the Saints will take on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium (today).
Onuachu joined the South Coast club on deadline from Belgian Pro League team KRC Genk, but he won’t be allowed to face the Bees since the British Home Office has yet to grant him a work permit.
On the same day as Onuachu, Ghana midfielder Kamaldeen Sulemana joined the Saints.
Southampton boss Nathan Jones has indicated that the two players will not be eligible to play against the Bees.
“They’re in the building but we’re limited with what we can do with them because of the work permit situation,” Jones told reporters ahead of the game.
“You’re better off ringing the Home Office to find out. We can keep asking but until we get clarification on their work permits, neither will be involved.”
Southampton occupy last position on the Premier League table.
